tree trimming to prevent power outages. good evening i'm julie haener. >> and i'm frank somerville. it's the first of several storms and it's almost here. our chief meteorologist bill martin is going to set the time line. but we begin with debora villalon who tells us truck drivers may have to find other routes. >> reporter: as rain is going to start out, wind will be a bigger problem than rain to start out. and in some of the bay area bridges wind can be a big hazard. behind this big rig, this offer knows it's not going to be such a smooth drive. >> if the wind becomes too substantial, and if it's causing vehicles to topple over or that's a concern then the bridge will be shut down for big riggs and high profile

vehicles. >> in storms like this we do expect there to be some power outages. >> reporter: pg & e also bracing, bringing winds down before winds do it. still crews can't get every branch so a flashlight with fresh batteries should be a must. creeks are way downright now. still sandbags are at the ready and san anselmo is sending out alerts. >> i think my first teammate is coming in 24 hours ago. >> they're pretty secure here, they're not going to go over. >> reporter: it might be a time to baton down the christmas decorations so they're not

wrecked by the bridge. this nevato homeowner says her christmas decorations are only half done but she will wait until after the storm. debora villalon. now to chief meteorologist bill martin. >> we got rain coming too, not just tomorrow but check it out. the last few days of november and into early december we've got heavy rain. we could see up to a foot of rain in parts of the north bay. wind gusts tomorrow as we pointed out at the 65 miles per hour. there's a high wind warning along the coast. and obviously with the big winds and the big rain you're going to get big surf. let's take a look at the wind. because i think winds are the big storm tomorrow morning

beside it is -- besides the wind. that means at half-moon bay 50 miles per hour. the winds begin to die down around 10 clock and they taper off in the afternoon. we have got wind, we have got rain and this is just storm number one. there's storm number two, three and four. and even one behind that. so i'll have all the details. i have the latest time line when i see you back here in about 15 minutes. we found homeowners raking leaves that can plug storm rains or gutters but it could be a losing battle. those high winds will likely blow more leaves off the trees. many people also filled sandbags if case they have to divert water away from their

homes. we found this bay area mother loading nine sandbags into her car. she says her family is still moving into their new home and they want to be prepared just in case. >> we just bought a house a few months ago. we've never been through a rain like this. so we just want to prepare because we've seen all the water come in. >> that woman told us she plans to cook the meat in her refrigerator tonight in case of a power outage it will last longer. workers spent the day clearing storm drains to prevent them from falling if the rain does fall. all crews will be on call tomorrow watching for flooding and downed trees. in addition, sandbags are also being made available to residents there. a high wind warning is going up along the coast overnight. bay area crab fishermen say the storms will likely make it too dangerous to leave the docks for the next four or five days. jana katsuyama tells us the fishermen were scrambling to bring in their catch, tie down

their boats and get them tied up. >> any time there's a storm it means we can't work. we can't go out and go fishing because it's too dangerous, it'll kill you. >> reporter: coast guard is advising all storm owners to keep from going out. and to make sure boats are tied down securely. >> even the big boats are coming in for this one because this is going to be a big storm. you have to be young or crazy to go out with what's coming. >> it's a 13 to 15-foot wave coming through. we take a pretty big swell. but once you add the wind it makes everything steep. >> reporter: the coast guard also is advising people to stay away from the shoreline where large waves could sweep people

happening now, a student occupation of a building at uc berkeley has just come to an end. it started about 4:00 this afternoon when a half dozen protesters chained themselves inside a vacant campus building. eric rasmussen is live and tells us what brought this to a close about 25 minutes ago. >> reporter: they said they got some of their demands met. this plaza was filled with students all night tonight to support students who had chained themselves to the building by their neck. they told us they were prepared to stay there all night but they came out to cheers about 20 minutes ago. now one of the organizers of this protest told me this was all about what he called representation, recruitment and retention of spaces for minority students here at cal. some of the protesters covered

their faces when they came out tonight and attempted to leave out a back door but we caught up with one of them and here's what he had to say. >> why did you feel like this was the way you had to do it. >> because getting caught up in this is taking forever. and they're calling it progress and we're not okay with that, we're frustrated that's why. >> reporter: the protesters said they had some of their demands met tonight that's why they came down sooner than expected tonight. the first demand was amnesty that they would not be penalized in nay way for what they did tonight. the second is a task force student development. they said this task force will be fast tracked, , made up of students about representation of minorities that they plan on

moving forward. but the protest has ended here tonight sooner than some expected. eric rasmussen, ktvu channel 2 news. despite some objections the new chancellor of uc berkeley will be getting a sizable raise. uc regents voted today too give nicholas dirks a raise over what his pred -- over what his predecessor earned. governor brown says the raise is inappropriate even though the extra money would come from private donations. the santa clara district attorney's office said today the 15-year-old arrested in a series of crimes will be tried as an adult. on friday november 16, police say 15-year-old modro and jonathan wilbanks robbed several businesses, killed a man during a carjacks and fired shots at police officers. the da said the supreme court bars minors from receiving the death penalty but wilbanks

being 26 could face capital punishment. a ktvu exclusive, we sit down with san jose's retiring police chief. the one thing he says that would have kept him on the job. the pay treu i -- patrioarch of a family died in jail. today charges against him were officially dropped. about 200 people took part in a candlelight vigil and march in san francisco tonight. they're remembering mayor mascone and harvey milk in the anniversary of their assassination. amber lee joins us with the story. >> reporter: the march ended here in the castro but it began

at city hall where the assassinations took place on this day 34 years ago. on the steps of city hall, people gathered to remember the two slain leaders. mayor george mascone and harvey milk the city's first openly gay supersraoeup super -- supervisor. family members say the two men were trail blazers for civil rights. and the dispair on november 27, 1978 within they were gunned down by former supervisor dan white has now turned into hope. >> we will not stop until we have equality across the globe and that is what tonight means. >> reporter: with candles in hand, hundreds marched from city hall to the castro reflecting on the impact of the assassination. >> it mean as great deal.

new video this evening of an arrest following a violent attack at a restaurant. a woman stabbed another woman at the jack in the box on international boulevard near

24th avenue. the suspect then ran from the scene and was later arrested about two blocks away. the victim was taken to the hospital. police say she is in stable condition tonight. no word yet on what prompted that attack. an east bay pub says computer hackers stole the credit card information of dozens of customers. ktvu's eric rasmussen tells us now there could be more victims out there. >> hundreds of miles from their favorite pub. >> we have $700 charge at staples in washington state. >> reporter: emily henry says unusual charges on her husband's credit card started popping up months ago. >> $26 charge at mcdonalds in nevato. >> reporter: henry is also the editor of the concord patch news website. she recently discovered she's not the only customer who's had her information stolen. >> there was one commenter today said they've had thousands, thousands of dollars taken out. >> we're doing everything we can so this never happens

again. >> owner j.j. fare says about 30 customers have told him their debit and credit card information was stolen so far. every time a busy swipes a credit card that information is collected by a third party so the business can get paid. but in this case, they believe that a hacker was able to infiltrate without even being in the business. >> reporter: did you pay cash? >> i did pay cash tonight. i did. >> reporter: we're told most of the customers have been refunded. it was all caught on video, the video take a look at this

it shows two men in a car pointing a gun right at that couple yesterday. the couple had shot some video of the men driving erratically. the men had followed them and one got into the couple's car. >> the husband and a suspect got into a struggle. the husband was able to push him out of the car and told his wife to hit the gas. >> police later arrested 21- year-old james crosby and 39- year-old michael meadows both are from oakland. a third woman has filed suit against the moraga school district over allegationless of sex abuse in the 1990s. the woman claims a science -- allegations of sex abuse in the 1990s. the woman claims a science

teacher abused her and the district ignored her claims. a lawsuit was filed in san francisco today on behalf of military women who want to be officially allowed to fight on the ground in wars. david stevenson tell us why they are so adamant that the military change its policy. >> reporter: the american civil liberties unions failed a lawsuit against the military of the u.s. >> the policy has the effect of closing whole career fields to servicewomen. and closing hundreds of thousands of positions to them. >> reporter: the plaintiffs include four women who have fought in the ground in afghanistan. zoe badel led a team of 46 servicewomen. >> they wore the same gear and they carried the same rifles and when the unit was attacked, my marines fought back. >> reporter: search and rescue

dozens of family and friends gathered at oikos university in oakland for a dedicated ceremony tonight. they witnessed the dedication of a memorial garden honoring the seven people killed during a shooting rampage back on april 2nd of last year. the alleged gunman is a former nursing student and he has pleaded not guilty to seven counts of murder. now to the south bay where milpitas police are searching for a gunman after a traffic stop prompted a shoot out. the officer says the he pulled the car over and moments later the driver started shooting. >> reporter: this is what the police car looks like now. a hole in the windshield. >> our officer was not shot but

his vehicle was struck. he did sustain a minor injury. >> reporter: the officer a six year veteran pulled the car over for a traffic violation. >> the driver of the violator vehicle exited the vehicle and opened fire on our officer. our officer was able to return fire. the violator fled in the vehicle. >> reporter: hours later they found the car blocks away abandoned. neighbors in the area said police were asking if they had seen the car before. >> that's pretty scary. you know, so thank goodness he's not here now. >> reporter: police towed the car. they said the honda was stolen. we found the registered owner who told us off camera it was parked here at this apartment complex at east san jose last night and this morning it was gone. schools in the area near the shooting remained open. >> i'm very unnerved dropping my child off at school this morning and getting a phone call from the principal that it was safe to get your kids off and going home to watch the news that they hasn't caught anybody. >> reporter: police released

the description of the man, a latino man 20 to 25 years old, 5'6" to 5'9" tall. rob roth, ktvu channel 2 news. the los angeles times is reporting that amazon plans to build a massive new distribution center in the city of tracy and it could bring up to 1,000 new jobs to that community. it would be amazon's third distribution center in california. the new building would be close to three major freeways and only about 30 miles from another amazon distribution center being built in patterson. someone, some where in this country could be a lot richer tomorrow night. the power ballot reu -- power ballot reu jackpot is now up to $500 million. california is one of eight states that does not participate in power ball.

only on 2 tonight, we sat down with san jose's police chief to find out why he's stepping town after spending only two years on the job. matt keller is in san jose where the chief gave us some inside into the issues facing the force and also told us the one place where his replacement will not come from, matt. >> reporter: police chief morris sat down with me for an exclusive interview and revealed to me the one thing that the city council could have done that would have kept

him on the job. chris moore is retiring after more than 30 years in law enforcement but he's leaving blind a san jose department in turmoil dealing with pension reform, pay cut, low moral and increase in crime. >> how would you characterize the department? >> dire. although we have people in the academy we continuously lose people to resignation and retirement. >> reporter: fagoni says she regrets having to conduct a new search less than two years later. moore said he would not be retiring if the council voted in august to put an initiative in august to help pay for more resources and officers. >> the issue for me is put it on the ballot. if that tax measure would have been put on the ballot and taxpayers would have decided not to fund it, we all could have lived with that. that's a choice the taxpayers

made. but they never had a chance to vote on it. >> reporter: at the first meeting last night several people told city staff they wanted an internal candidate. but moore said no one inside the department is interested on the top job. >> once it was determined no one from inside the organization, for all the same reasons, felt compelled to seek the job, it opens up the opportunity for other chiefs, sitting chiefs. >> reporter: as for what's next, moore says he's going to take a month off then consider other career possibilities. including police chief jobs in other jurisdictions. >> reporter: now chief moore says before he retires in january he would like to see every officer have a mounted camera on their uniform. something he says will save the city time and money when dealing with complaints from the public. reporting live in san jose, matt keller, ktvu news. a follow up tonight on a double homicide that happened in the east bay over the

weekend. oakland police now say the two people found dead early sunday morning were teenaged girls. police say one victim was a 16- year-old from oakland. the other was a 15-year-old from san leandro. the teens were found near brookdale park around 6:00 in the morning and taken to the hospital where they later died. investigators say the two were friends. no arrests have been made. 499 vehicles were reported stolen in alameda county last month. that's according to the alameda regional auto theft task force. here's the list now of the top five most commonly stolen models. 167 honda civics were stolen, followed by 161 honda accords, 44 nissan maximas and 33 acura integras and 25 ford pickups. retired secretary of state rice met with her three biggest opponents. rita williams tells us that

meeting did little to sway allegations that rice miss led the public about the september 11 attack at the consulate in benghazi. >> reporter: the u.s. ambassador to the united nations wasn't talking after a closed door meeting she requested with three top republican senators today. but the senators were talking about susan rice. >> bottom line, i'm more disturbed now than i was before. we are significantly troubled by many of the answers that we got and some that we didn't get. >> the information given to the american people was wrong. >> reporter: that was the information rice gave on sunday talk shows five days after the september 11th attack on the benghazi consulate that killed ambassador chris stephens and three other americans. she said the attack was a spontaneous protest. >> there was clear classified information that indicated that this was a terrorist attack

from the beginning. >> reporter: rice explained she was using these unclassified talking points. stripped of references to al- qaida and said there was no intention to mislead. >> in a separate meeting today susan rice seemed to win over one senator, independent joe lieberman. unfortunately for her he's retiring and will not get a vote to confirm her as the next secretary of state if she's nominated. rita williams, ktvu channel 2 news. a new report from the centers for disease control says new data on hiv infection young people paints a shocking picture of risky behavior. the cdc estimates more than a quarter of new infections in the u.s. in 2010 were in young people ages 13 to 24 years old the majority male. of those the cdc says 60% are

unaware of their hiv status. gay and bisexual report a higher rate of risky behavior. officials in san francisco today asked the federal court of appeals for 24 hours advanced warning if same-sex marriages are formally legalized in california. the u.s. supreme court meets friday to consider whether to review the challenge to prop eight which is the voter approved ban on gay marriage. if the supreme court refuses to hear the case, it would direct the appeals court to formerly end the case and same-sex marriage would become legal in california. city leaders in san francisco say if that happens they would need at least 24 hours to prepare for a crush of marriage requests. time magazine announces the nominees for person of the year including a high profile bay area ceo and one nominee who is not a person at all. >> back here in just 10 minutes, tracking the storms, the series of storms headed our way it is going to be very wet

police in the south bay are asking for the public's help in identifying two men who are responsible for a smash and grab robbery. we want to show you a surveillance photo taken just past noon in los gatos. the men got out of a blue acura, pulled on ski masks then entered the storm. the robbers held the employees at gunpoint, smashed the cases and grabbed jewelry. police say the men are asian or latino 25 to 30 years of age.

and about 5'6" to 5'7" tall. a moment of silence was held today at wood side high school for a 14-year-old girl. the freshman was killed yesterday while riding her bike to school. people have been leaving flowers, toys and balloons at the corner of jefferson avenue where that deadly accident occurred. today police identified the girl as lela beband of redwood city. those who knew her remembered her as intellectually curious and compassionate. >> she was very intelligent, very bright, very funny, she always had a book in her hand. >> investigators say lela was wearing her helmet and it appears this was truly an accident and that neither she nor the driver committed any traffic violations. a man who forced a woman to take money out of babank has be

arrested and charged. kody alam smith pressured students to buy magazine and in some cases forced them to withdraw cash from campus atms then stole the money. police say they are still looking for two of smith's accomplices. in news of the world tonight, in egypt, tens of thousands are protests in tehrere square. some accuse mr. morsi of high jacking the revolution. behind blue tarps the remains of arafatt were exhumed. samples were taken to try to determine if arafat was poisoned. three separate forensic teams will examine them. arafat died eight years ago. tests have shown traces of a lethal radio active substance. in greece, the money is on

new research released today shows hot spots where the risk for breast cancer is 20 to 23% higher. the majority of those high risk neighbors are right here in the bay area. >> reporter: researchers tracked breast cancer neighborhood by neighborhood and found among the state's highest risks about 80% are neighborhoods in the bay.

>> that's scary. i want to know why. >> environmentment, environmentmental impact. >> reporter: in eastern marin county there's already research on breast cancer cluster. >> it's an opportunity to look at those areas, all those areas and see what's different and what is similar. >> reporter: barlow and public health institute researchers said they study did not find a common cause. lifestyle, better screening, delayed childbirth, hormone therapy have all been proposed. >> but if it's all over the bay area i think the important thing to look into is environmental causes. >> reporter: activists say this study should trigger cause for action from local public health agencies. researchers say they have ruled out socio economic factors, it has to be something else. john fowler ktvu channel 2 news. we now know the name of the

fourth person who died at a sacramento county nursing home after eating poisonous mushrooms. the sheriff's office identified the latest victim at 92-year- old dorothy heart. three other seniors died from the poisonous mushrooms. sheriff investigators say the caretaker who picked those mushrooms did not know they were poisonous. b.a.r.t. officials are teaming up for a modernization. a new service would include additional cars and more frequent service which could accommodate 50% more riders. it's still unclear how the modernization would be funded. one possibility would be asking vote education -- voters for more money. a project to turn the bay

bridge into a art project is ongoing. >> to do this technically is while it's going to be elegant it takes a lot of work. a lot of coordination. >> the money for this art project comes from private donations of the $8 million needed, 2 million still need to be raised. some residents in plumas county in the sierra fear that the incoming rainstorms may cause mud slides on a hill burned last summer. crews removed trees and bushes from the 75-acre burn zone created by the so called chips fire. now people who live at the bottom of feather river canyon are concerned that heavy rain will cause the hill to come sliding toward their homes. others are predicting that the river will rise but they don't think that the hill will come down. looking outside we can see

both of the pulses lining up. pulse number one, number two actually this one back here is actually catching up with the one in front of it so it's going to move over the bay area tomorrow morning as one pretty powerful system with lots of wind. the leading edge 200 miles offshore. it shows up the first rain early tomorrow morning. the wind shows up a little before that. the weather headline is obviously the morning commute. it's going to be nice after about 1:00. not nice but the rain will die down. the winds will die down and the afternoon i think you will see a little bit of sunshine as well, rain and wind all over the morning commute. san rafael bridge we always think about on strong wind. but every bridge, you get some bufferrering around on that. but the bridges that go east to west will be the most difficult. those are the ones that get hit the hardest. thursday through sunday more wet weather heading our way.

here we are tomorrow morning. see the wind pulling in here. see those green and yellows right along the coast those are 40 to 50-mile an hour winds right here. it's mostly a coastal and bay event. you inland areas will likely not notice a heck of a lot of wind tomorrow. as you look at the computer here, you look at the first system, the heart of the morning commute 4:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. wind and rain it's got everything. maybe a little bit of thunder and lightning as well. on thursday it's going to rain a lot up there on thursday. not much for anyone else. it's going to be mainly for the bay bridge. and then it switches thursday and friday and rain for everybody. san jose, morgan hill you will get some rain. but the main event will remain in the north bay. we could see one foot of rain when this is all done. 7:00a.m., you can actually see system one and system two they

kind of merge up. that's your morning commute that's 7:00 a.m. here we are at 9:00 a.m., it's the back edge but it's still raining hard. 10:00a.m. starting to break out, santa clara you're still very wet. and then it breaks out so that's how that goes. we move through time again, 24 hours, here comes thursday then it slips through on friday morning. that's how it goes. friday morning looks like a wet morning commute. we got temperatures tomorrow that are going to be on the mild side. lots of 60s. that's a warm storm, that's very el nino like when you get this subtropical moisture. you're getting rain and daytime highs in the mid-60s. everybody is here tomorrow morning. sal will be here and mark tamayo will be here tracking the storm for the morning commute. seems like as time goes on the price goes up for casa
